ONE OF FIVE PATRIOTIC SONS. The report circulated recently that Private Thos. Alexander Bailiff, of the 3/1 Hertfordshire Regiment, third son of Mr Jno. Bailiff, of Poole, Burton Salmon, had won the coveted honour of the Distinguished Conduct Medal. has been officially verified in the Battalion Order for January 18th of Bailiff's regiment, a copy of which he has sent to his parents. Private Bailiff's brave act, which brought him the D.C.M., was that of saving an officer of the Irish Guards, or, in his own words:- "Going out for a wounded officer after the battle of Festubert, on May 18th las." Private Bailiff is in his 23rd year. He served his apprenticeship to gardening at Byram Hall Gardens (his father is forester) under Mr. Geo. Taylor; next he worked under Mr. Geo. Summers at Sandbeck, the Earl of Scarborough's residence; and when war broke out he was gardener at Hatfield House Gardens, the residence of Lord Salisbury. He joined the 1st Herts. Regiment and went to the front early in November, 1914, was invalided home after a serious illness last summer and is now back at duty with another battalion of his regiment in Herts. He is to be married to a Kilburn young lady on the 19th. Mr and Mrs Bailiff are very proud of their son's gallant conduct; and so are also his numerous friends in the hamlet of Poole, Burton Salmon. Lady Ramsden, wife of Sir John Frenchville Ramsden, of Byram Park, take a kindly interest in Mr Bailiff and his family and especially in their hero. In letters written by her dated the 20th and 24th January respectively, her Ladyship says how very pleased she was to hear that Thomas had been awarded the D.C.M sends congratulations and says how proud they must all be of him. Her Ladyship mentions also that Sir John was one of the rearguard who left Gallipoli Peninsula, adding: "All went well with the arrangements and the weather, otherwis4 might have had a most dangerous time. He is now in Egypt and is very well indeed." Lady Ramsden mentions that a parcel has been kindly sent by the people of Brotherton to Sir John, but she thinks he will not get it, as it would arrive about the time he left Gallipoli. Private Thos. Bailiff, D.C.M., writing his parents, tell with evident pleasure of the "long chat" he had with Lord and Lady Salisbury, who invited him to meet them. There are three other sons serving in the Army. The eldest is Corporal Jno. Kelly Bailiff, of the Military Mounted Police, who is expected home from the Front shortly. He has a wife and child living at Monk F5ryston. The second son is Mr. Jas. Hy. Bailiff, gamekeeper for Mr St. John Durnford, Loversall, near Doncaster, who is in group six of Lord Derby's Scheme; the fourth and fifth brothers are Private Richard (dick) and Private Robert Victor Bailiff, who together joined the Scots Greys in May last. but transferred to the 6th K.O.Y.L.I. Both have been to the Front. Richard was severely wounded with shrapnel, recovered and has now gone back, and Victor is convalescent at Dovertown Scotland. John Kelly Bailiff.
