Decoration Record:
Decoration: British Empire Medal (London Gazette: 38139 Page: 5751 Dec. 2, 1947)
Citation: Italy. Citation for BEM: On 8th May, 1947, Sergeant SHUTTLEWORTH was driving a Jeep unarmed, but accompanied by his pet Alsatian dog, from CASERTA To NAPLES, when in the vicinity of CAIVAND, he was stopped by two persons who asked in an American accent for a lift to NAPLES, to which he agreed. The Non-Commissioned Officer formed the opinion that they were deserters, although they said they were in the Merchant Marine and from NAPLES. From observations he discovered that both men were armed and as they were acting in a suspicious manner he ordered them to keep their hands in sight, and then drove to NAPLES. On being searched, both men were found in possession of fully loaded automatic pistols. They were then handed over to the United States Military Police who identified them as deserters from LEGHORN. Although unarmed, Sergeant SHUTTLEWORTH succeded in arresting two dangerous armed deserters, thus preventing them carrying out "Armed hold Ups" an offence prevalent in the area. It is considered that the initiative, high courage and devotion to duty of the Non-Commissioned Officer, is an example to other Non-Commissioned Officers in the Corps of Royal Military Police, and is worthy of special commendation.National Archive WO 373/70 Pt.1.
