Soldier and Hospital Box.
To-day - Before Mr G S Lancaster, Alderman F G Foster and Mr J Bragg.
Maurice Johns, private, 15th Hampshire Regiment, was charged with having stolen a Hospital box, containing 1s 33/4d, from the "Duke of Buckingham." High Street, the property of the Hospital Saturday Committee, on the 14th inst. - Detective Simpson stated that the box was seen about 8pm by the licensee Emily Bonny. Shortly before 9 prisoner was seen leaving the house by Lance Corporal Claydon of the Military Foot Police. The latter noticed that the prisoners tunic was unbuttoned and that there was something bulky inside. Asked what he had the, prisoner replied "A parcel" but it turned out to be a Hospital box, whereupon the prisoner was taken to the police station. When charged by witness, prisoner said "I met a man in the bar this evening, I said "Will you get me three bottles of beer?" I gave him 3d but instead of getting me the beer he put this box in my coat. Prisoner further said he was under the influence of drink at the time. He gave a description of the man, but witness had been unable to trace him. On the application of the police, prisoner was put on remand till Thursday.
